Effect of TMJ on Fascia by Iris Mack

The Effect of TMJ Disorder on the Fascia

TMJ Disorder refers to problems with the temporomandibular joint which is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull in front of each ear. It allows you to move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk, chew and yawn. If this joint is not stable, it makes the whole body not stable causing fascial pain throughout the body.  Common treatments include the provision of occlusal splints (bite guards), pain medication, and psychosocial intervention like cognitive behavioral therapy. I prefer using yoga or myofascial TMJ release. These are natural, drug free and can help release tension, pain and discomfort in the joint, gums, jaw and teeth. Myofascial release can also help the teeth realign.

Some of the symptoms of TMJ include migraines, sinus problems, jaw pain, earaches, neck and lower back pain, shoulder pain, hip and knee pain, ear ringing, vision problems and scoliosis, to name a few. TMJ can be caused by clinching the teeth which has a direct effect on the fascia. As mentioned in other articles, the fascia has a continuous connection throughout the whole body and the effects of the tightening of the fascia in one area can create problems elsewhere. As the fascia inflame in the jaw, it wraps around the TMJ joint, destabilizing the joint movement. The fascia can wrap around the eyes and optic nerve affecting vision, or around the cranium causing headaches. As the tightening migrates down the spine, inhibiting blood flow to the tissues, it can pull on the spine and sacrum causing neck, shoulder, mid and lower back and hip pain.

Myofascial TMJ Release can help bring balance and relief by releasing fascial tension in the temporomandibular joint, throughout the gum and fascia tissue in the mouth. Because of the way the joint connects the jaw and the temporal bones of the skull, releasing the fascia allows the free movement of your jaw, and unwinds the fascia related to other parts of the body.  Each individual will have the fascia tighten and wrap around different areas depending on the person’s unique past health history. Since the fascia covers all of the muscles, organs and nerves, releasing the fascia where it has wrapped around and matted down is why fascia release is the most effective natural treatment in relieving the associated pain with TMJ disorder.

It would be great if we could totally avoid clinching the teeth, but the fascia has already wrapped around the joint which makes it difficult to stop since the fascia pulls us back into clinching. That’s why it is important to get Myofascial TMJ Release to help break and retrain the fascial patterns in the jaw. Toxic foods can tighten the TMJ fascia as well as other areas, so eating a proper diet for your blood type and avoiding sugar can help the fascia not wrap and tighten the TMJ. Since the fascia runs throughout the body, make sure you are stretching on a daily basis. Stay hydrated – alkaline water is the better choice.

We take great care of our cars and other things.  We need to start taking better care of our bodies.
