Q&A - w/ Don McCollister

Don McCollister, Grammy winner and public speaker will be generously offering his time to do a Q&A with musicians and any other wristband wearers about his window of time producing at Nickel & Dime. His music industry experience is spanned decades and he comes from the perspective of both producer and musician.

Atlanta, GA based Americana duo The Ormewoods are Don McCollister and Claire Pearson.

Don and Claire bring dynamic individual musical histories to their remarkable partnership. Don’s 25 year career includes work with Sister Hazel, Shawn Mullins and Third Day. He also produced tracks for Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush before they formed the superstar duo Sugarland. Artists that Don McCollister has worked with have collectively sold over 15 million albums, been nominated for 85 major music awards, of which they have won 47, had 34 #1 billboard hits and charted singles. Often dubbed "the artist's" producer because he himself is a multi-instrumentalist who continues to perform live.

Claire Pearson (previously performed as Pearson Perry but dropped the Perry moniker after divorce) is an Atlanta based singer-songwriter whose song "Love is a Mountain" (co-written with Heidi Higgins) charted #37 on on the top 100 list of most played singles on independent radio in 2014. She was also one of the top 5 most played pop artists on independent radio in 2014 according to Roots Music Report. She founded Atlanta Intown Songwriters in 2011 to build the Atlanta artist network for aspiring songwriters.

In 2016, they quickly built a base of fans as they toured the Southeast and Mid-West promoting their debut album "The Bedroom Sessions". The album continues to receive strong Americana radio support across the country thanks to their #1 single "HeyBabe" (RootsMusicReport) which has been on the folk charts for over 30 consecutive weeks.

The Ormewoods scored a unique coup, with the key track “Year of Mercy” being named runner up for Best Folk Song 2016 by Song of the Year Songwriting Competition and nominated as Best Folk Song of 2016 by the American Songwriting Awards. The dynamic of the what some have called “the happy Civil Wars” is further reflected on songs like the sly and soulful “Hey Babe,” about the tension between not wanting to be tied up again and those feelings of falling in love; the playful, high energy “Back To You,” about finishing what they started so many years ago; and “Sleep Like Strangers,” about those occasional moments of doubt and distance.

The duo kicked off 2018 by playing at the prestigious #30ASongwritersFestival and is finishing up their sophomore album Not Your Mama's Folk in Atlanta, GA in time for festival/touring season spring/summer 2018!

Josh Shicker

A Stranger and a Friend is a collaboration between singer-songwriters Josh Schicker and Lindsay Allward-Theimer and violinist, Cat Espinosa.  Based out of Atlanta, GA, the trio focus on creating music that is stirring and intimate while remaining accessible and beautiful.

Schicker’s musical career started in the mid-90’s fronting alt-rock bands in his native Michigan. Since going solo his focus has been on a more refined sound and vocal presentation. His solo efforts have found placements in indie film soundtracks and some international radio play. Most recently, Schicker’s ballad, “No Place Like You”, was featured in the romantic drama, Old Fashioned which recently released on DVD.

Allward-Theimer, also a native of Michigan, came into singing more recently and song-writing is a natural expression of her buoyant personality. The ukulele keeps an element of levity to the set list while her cutting harmonies add drama to balance the scales. A strong melodic focus is at the forefront of their combined efforts resulting in a blend of honest and playful lyrics over lush acoustic music.

Espinosa was recruited to join the band after sitting in on several gigs. Her playing complimented the vocal / duet sound and offered a third "voice" to the already unique sound. Her joy and earnest playing is lyrical and rounds out the acoustic feel of A Stranger and a Friend with pleasant confidence.

The ensemble plans to record their first album in the coming year and are focused on building a catalog of songs worthy of their audience. Combining the drama and vocal interplay of The Civil Wars and the sincere heartfelt yearning of The Swell Season, A Stranger and a Friend is carving out their own unique sound adding a little smirk to the mix. There is much more to come from this compelling trio.

With Claire (the duo’s chief songwriter) drawing lyrics directly from entries in her diary detailing the first 90 days of the duo’s re-connection after many years and unexpected resulting relationship, the duo decided the best way to capture the intimate nature of the songs was to turn her bedroom into a recording studio. Don set up his gear, and the album was recorded in a series of literal bedroom sessions. While recording and gearing up for the official roll-out of their album, The Ormewoods scored a unique coup, with the key track “Year of Mercy” being named runner up for Best Folk Song 2016 by Song of the Year Songwriting Competition and nominated as Best Folk Song of 2016 by the American Songwriting Awards.

An established musician, Mike Snowden manned the bass guitar for over 20 years with various touring and studio bands. Traversing multiple countries he has shared the stage with the likes of The Indigo Girls, Joe Cocker, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Dave Matthews Band and many others. These days his musical career has shifted with the cigar box guitar becoming the focal point. In addition to his hand crafted instruments Mike has mastered the cigar box guitar creating a classic blues sound reminiscent of some of the greats that have faded into musical obscurity. Along with his “one man band” Mike has spread his musical gospel with live performances on television, appearances on the radio and a wealth of videos on YouTube with over half of a million views. This exposure has led to a steady flow of performances in the southeast expanding into NYC, Europe and music festivals such as South by Southwest.

Along with his busy schedule of music playing and guitar building Mike has been able to carve out enough time to release multiple albums that show off his masterful skills at manipulating a cigar box guitar.

Rev Jeff Mosier

Rev Jeff Mosier

Join us to welcome the Rev. Jeff Mosier Ensemble featuring Neal Fountain, Leah Calvert, Michael Westbrooks, Adam Goodhue, Mark Nelson and Rev. Jeff Mosier every Sunday night from 6-9 for an eclectic mix of improvised music.

Scruggs'-style banjo picker "The Rev" Jeff Mosier, one of the earliest music pioneers who merged bluegrass instruments and traditional tunes with the magnetic energy of rock and roll, founded the jamgrass band Blueground Undergrass (BGUG) in 1998 after years of crafting his banjo skills in various bands, playing everything from bluegrass with his brother Johnny (Good Medicine) to experimental rock (Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit) to jazz-fusion (The Ear Reverents).

Blueground Undergrass, the band he fronted for more than a decade, recorded four albums and built a sizable national following by combining bluegrass purism with a jam band sensibility. Later, as the jamband scene became more jam-tronica and less roots-driven, he formed a more song-driven rock/bluegrass ensemble, The Mosier Brothers band, performing at festivals, theaters, and private events throughout the region. Having shared the stage with such legends as Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, Col. Bruce Hampton, Phish, Leftover Salmon, and Widespread Panic, Mosier has always been a versatile artist who is as comfortable performing on a stage full of musicians as he is playing solo.

Currently, Mosier can be found performing around the country, occasionally joining projects such as the fully improvisational musical ensemble Everyone Orchestra or stalwart and vivacious The Grass Is Dead band. He is also very active playing shows, benefits, and festivals around his home base of Atlanta, as well as producing and recording in the studio.

Mosier's superb vocal mastery and unique banjo picking combine to deliver a special experience highlighting his original tunes as well as familiar traditional songs in novel arrangements. Whether traveling through acoustic ballads, thought-provoking and humorous banter, or high-energy bluegrass, each performance by Rev Jeff Mosier is a musical journey sending the listener on an enjoyable foot-tapping, mind-bending, and body-grooving jaunt down the road and back home again.
